UMWO: socially distanced and musically expressive

Writer's picture: Selia MyersSelia Myers

Today, I had my first in-person rehearsal with the University of Maryland Wind Orchestra since March 2020. It was an incredible feeling to be playing with other musicians in person again. My musicianship certainly benefited from virtual collaboration projects taken on since March 2020, but I am very happy to be back in the same physical rehearsal space as my colleagues again. We are rehearsing Reynaldo Hahn's "Le Bal de Beatrice d'Este". I am playing principal flute and piccolo.

During rehearsal, I wore a handmade face mask made specifically for flutists. On my flute, I put a Win-D-Fender on my headjoint to mitigate the spread caused by blowing air into my flute. On my piccolo headjoint, I use a Piccolo Air Shield to deflect my air back toward me. I am grateful for the tools and resources available to me to make safe rehearsal possible during this pandemic.
